Security Specialist Yale Alerts Homeowners To Lock Snapping

Yale the security specialist is advising homeowners to carry out some easy actions to help secure their homes.

This is in response to recent reports from West Yorkshire Police, warning of the growing problem of burglary by means of lock snapping:

1. Identify your lock cylinder
Burglars are currently applying force to the door lock cylinder, rendering it useless and allowing them easy access.

The locks most at risk of this strike are fitted with the Euro profile cylinder, which is fitted to most PVC and composite doors installed within the last 15 years and works in combination with a multipoint lock.

So first of all, you have to identify your lock type and if you have a Euro cylinder, and your door is more than a year or two old, then move to the next step….

2. Replace it with a cylinder that meets current security standards

Currently, the best protection is achieved by choosing locks, cylinders and door hardware, licensed and approved by the Secured by Design crime reduction initiative.

Other standards include, the Master Locksmith Association’s Sold Secure SS312 Diamond standard, and the new Kitemark standard TS007, created by the Door Hardware Federation and Glass and Glazing Federation, which requires a “3 star” standard.

3. Consider replacing your multipoint lock at the same time

Apart from lock snapping, Yale estimates that over one million multipoint locks will fail this year, as they reach the end of their expected lifecycle.

The warning signs of this include the door handle drooping, jamming, feeling loose, or making a ‘clunking’ sound when operated.

Rather than facing the cost of replacing the whole door, Yale’s Doormaster™ replacement multipoint lock range, is a simple solution and offers a 10year guarantee, as well as complying with the latest security standards.
