The Future’s Bright, the Future’s Orangery

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The Future’s Bright, the Future’s Orangery With the trend for people improving not moving, more properties are undertaking full makeovers including extensions.

A stylish way to extend, and one that is fast replacing the garden room or conservatory, is to add an orangery to a property to create a light filled room with an interesting story.

Garden room specialist Westbury Conservatories has seen a dramatic increase of requests over the last year from clients looking for a romantic, nostalgic solution to their expanding family needs.

Typically classical in style, these rooms usually combine masonry, timber and glass and though traditionally used for storing delicate citrus plants, their use is now far more fluid. Family rooms, dining areas, kitchens and offices all work well in this space.

It seems orangeries are gaining in popularity, as they are not only beautiful but practical too:

  • With limited glazing to the roof an orangery is less prone to temperature fluctuations typical of a conservatory.
  • Westbury’s orangeries are also roofed with a single-ply polymeric membrane, which creates a lifelong leak-proof seamless finish and also works to insulate the room.
  • Recent changes to planning laws also mean that an original rear wall can be extended up to 4 metres deep before planning permission is required, making an orangery an ideal next step to adding space to a property.

Westbury’s design team works with the client to create an extension that is sympathetic to the existing property. This is then handcrafted by Westbury’s in-house joinery department based in Essex.

Clients then either choose to use their own builder to create the foundations and basework, or Westbury’s building team can undertake this as part of the overall orangery installation.

Westbury’s orangeries are great value too, starting at £40,000 for all design, building works and finishing.

Visit the Westbury website to view the stunning choice of orangery designs.

Garden Pavilions That Look And Smell Divine

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Garden Pavilions That look And Smell Divine Following months of extensive research, Crown Pavilions has developed the ultimate long-life timber preservation treatment for their 2009 flagship range: pure, unadulterated Cedar.

Up to now, garden pavilions have mainly been made from pine and treated with chemical preservatives, which need to be re-applied yearly.

Rain, sun, snow, ice, storms… customers want their investment to last for many years without the timber rotting, splitting, warping or being eaten away by insects.

“Pavilion manufacturers have been using cedar for their roof tiles for years,” explains Damion Merry, Sales Director of Crown Pavilions. “It’s well known for its naturally occurring preservatives, which make it highly resistant to moisture, decay and insect damage - so it’s much less likely to crack, warp or rot over time.”

And because cedar doesn’t need chemicals, it’s more environmentally friendly. So we decided to use it for the main structure as well and this is exactly what we’ve done with our new 2009 range.”

“So for the very first time we have produced a British-manufactured cedar pavilion to the same exacting spec as our pine pavilions.

So customers get the best of both worlds: chunky, robust components such as, thick 6 inch by 6 inch posts and 4 inch by 3 inch hand rails - but in a more durable, aesthetically pleasing and more environmentally friendly timber than pine.”

But what about the high price tag associated with cedar?
“Because we’re well aware of the pressure on customers’ purse strings, we’ve made the decision to minimise our margins, without compromising on quality or moving our manufacturing abroad.

This means that some of our cedar pavilions actually cost less than many competitor’s pine pavilions– and ours are hand-crafted in the UK.”
Another great thing about cedar is that because it doesn’t need treating it smells divine. “Something you definitely don’t get with chemicals!”

Featured here is an example of the Crown Seymour within a garden landscaped by the company.

  • The new cedar Seymour has been specifically designed to fit snugly into corner spots or compact rectangular plots.
  • Yet it manages to accommodate 9-12 people very comfortably, without dominating your outdoor space or looking out of proportion.
  • Priced at £9140 for 8-10 people.
  • Prices include Crown Table and benches.

Solid Oak Garden Gazebos From Orlestone Oak

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Solid Oak Garden Gazebos From Orlestone Oak If staying in is the new going out, then where better to while away sunny summer days, than in your very own bespoke gazebo from Orlestone Oak.

Orlestone Oak design, build, and install bespoke gazebos of the highest specification made from solid oak using traditional oak frame techniques.

Post and brace joints are hand carved mortise and tenon with hand-made 5-sided tapered pegs; this ensures that the joint is under tension and keeps the joints tight as the timber shrinks.

The word gazebo originates from the English verb “to gaze” combined with the Latin ending “bo”, giving the meaning “I will look”.
It’s easy to understand how this naming occurred, as a gazebo is the perfect place to relax and observe beautiful surroundings.

Working with Orlestone Oak’s design team, customers can specify their own choice of roof tiles, timber shingles or even thatch; they can also specify their chosen floor, whether it be brick, tiles or timber decking, making each gazebo truly unique.

Orlestone Oak is an established manufacturer of exceptional hand-built oak-framed buildings with a 20year reputation for excellence. All timber is sourced from sustainable forests in the UK and Europe.

Featured here is a Solid oak garden gazebo, built to provide a covered poolside living/dining area:

  • Oak newels on the curved wooden balustrade are turned to a traditional design.
Oak posts and curved braces with mortise and tenon peg joints.
Finished with a Kent peg tiled roof with fully leaded finial and brick tiled floor, in concentric circle design. 3metre diameter.
  • Prices: From £6,000
