British Food Is Third Most Missed Home ComfortBrits can dine on home comforts for 17% less in the USA, but tucking into British nosh in France will cost you 133% more than at home.

British food is the third most missed home comfort, after the NHS and family Christmases, for Brits living abroad, but new research shows that the cost of eating nostalgically overseas, varies significantly depending on where you set up home.

The USA caters most for our tastes, offering British favourites such as baked beans, Heinz Tomato Ketchup and English tea bags, 17 per cent cheaper than at home; however, Brits settling closer to home in France, face a price hike of 133 per cent on home comforts.

The research by Foreign Currency Direct, a specialist foreign exchange provider, shows that British foods brought in France, cost more than double the price you would pay in the UK; the equivalent of £35.75 for 6 eggs, 200 English tea bags, a jar of Branston Pickle, Heinz Tomato Ketchup, baked beans, 12 rashers of unsmoked bacon and a pint of beer or lager.
At today’s exchange rates these items cost just £15.36 in the UK and £12.82 in the US.

  • Home comforts at a cost:
The average price of British foods in the Eurozone is £27.04 – almost twice that of the UK (£15.36).
  • Those living in Italy may have to turn to more local brews since the cost of 200 English tea bags (e.g. Tetley’s or PG tips) costs three times more than in the UK (£12.78 and £4.40 respectively).
  • Expats in Greece will find that they are paying up to 92 per cent more on British food items compared to the UK, with the total cost of British foods coming to £29.48 – almost double the equivalent UK cost (£15.36).
