Expert advice from Rowena Howell, Marketing Manager at Halo Living:
There was a time when people bought furniture in sets –sofas with matching occasional chairs and identical end tables holding twin lamps.
The credit crunch has affected the interior trends in a positive way – encouraging us to put personality and life back into our home, instead of aspiring to create the catalogue look.
Mixing and matching everything from furniture to fabrics enables us to create eclectic room settings over time. Here are my tops tips for mixing and matching in the home:
Unlike other materials, leather actually improves with age making it a great long term investment; why not pair your leather sofa with summer colours to brighten the room, or add another classic pattern to complement such as tartan?
Play with patterns, if your staple cream sofa is the ‘jeans’ of your outfit than accessorize with patterns. Bold stripes in varied fabrics are an exciting way to develop more of a statement around plain furniture.
While new colours are always great, don’t forget about bringing in highly textured fabrics and varying shapes. Try accent cushions that come in oblong or round forms as a compliment to the traditional square shape.
Featured here is the Hastings Love Seat – Vintage Cigar & Accentuate Moss:
A combination in rich tones of Vintage Cigar Leather and a new fabric called “Accentuate Moss”. Available in choice of scatter back or traditional formal back cushions. A lovely sit that’s a soft, warm classic style. Priced at £999.
Think about why you choose the furniture you have in your home – do you really need a three piece suite? Why not go for a large foot stool, corner sofa and statement chair – be daring and have fun trying new things out!
