Bensons’ Tips On When To Change Your Bed

Bensons’ Tips On When To Change Your Bed March is National-Check-Out-Your-Bed Month, so leading bed specialist Bensons for Beds has offered five reliable ways to tell when it’s time to throw out the old and check in the new.

“Working out when your bed has outlived its usefulness isn’t rocket science, but you do need to know what to look for,” says Bensons’ bed expert Simon Williams. “Unlike many major household items, the wear and tear of a bed can be very gradual and almost go unnoticed.

“Unfortunately, the impact an old bed has on a good night’s sleep can be enormous. But when poor sleep kicks in, people rarely think to blame their bed.”

Bensons five-point ‘Health-check for Mattress Happiness’; carry it out in March on mattresses three or more years old:

  • Waking up with a stiff neck or backache is a classic sign of mattresses no longer offering the correct level of support for a good night’s sleep.
  • Obvious signs of wear and tear – lumps and bumps in the mattress, a torn or stained cover – are sure signs that a bed is past it.
  • Mattresses that cause ‘roll-together’ need to go.
  • Beds that go creak or crunch in the night have reached their bin-by date.
  • Beds that are 10 years old or more will almost certainly need replacing.

Simon Williams added: “We regularly check the safety and efficiency of our cars and many other household appliances. Given we spend a third of our lives in our beds, it makes sense to check them out regularly too.”
